Color Inheritence Predition Chart

The Labrador Retriever Coat Color Inheritance Prediction chart shown below helps you understand the labrador retriever colors for breeding strategies and breeding stock selection. Though there exists more scientific methods for genetic prediction, this is one of the easiest charts to use for quickly estimating coration. The outer ring in the first row of the chart shows the visible labrador retriever coat color with the small upper right circle showing the nose color (black or liver). The inner rings in the first row of the chart show the hidden color genes carried by the labrador retriever. Entries in the chart show the probabilities of producing various coat colors within a labrador retriever litter.

If your labrador retriever is black, the possible gene types are: I, II, III, IV.
If your labrador retriever is chocolate, the possible gene types are: VIII, IX.
If your labrador retriever is yellow with a black nose the possible gene types are: V, VI.
If your labrador retriever is yellow with a liver-colored nose then the gene type VII.

For example, if your results show that your labrador retriever is a Type V, your labrador retriever is a yellow labrador retriever with a black nose and does not carry the hidden genes for the chocolate labrador retriever. If you were to breed your labrador retriever with a Type VIII, the resulting litter would be all black labrador retriever puppies. Some of these predictions are averaged over the long run and can vary from one side of the spectrum to the other. Others like the example above and breeding yellow to yellow and always getting yellow are consistently accurate.
